Specific – Be as specific as you want to be when you set your goal. For example, you want to become a Grade B officer in RBI or GRADE A/B officer in NABARD or want to clear IBPS PO exam and join any bank as PO. Also, make the goal a tangible one. For example, between “I want to become a PO in a bank” and “I want to become a Grade A/B Officer in RBI”, the latter is much more tangible and drives you to action and a specific goal.
Measurable – Setting measurable goals means breaking down your goal to measurable elements. For example, to become a Grade B Officer in RBI, you would attempt to score _______marks in written exam, _______ marks in the interview, etc. or for clearing BANK PO, you need to clear cut-off in both Prelims and Mains and clear the Interview round. Writing down measurable elements of your goals can help the objective to be clearer and easier to reach.

Attainable – Is your goal attainable? For example, if your goal is to become a Grade B officer in RBI or to qualify IBPS PO exam with a high score, can you dedicate the time and effort required for the same? Is your skill set matching the requirements of your goals? Similarly, while aiming for any goal, one should evaluate whether the same is attainable or not? One can always aim to score high in BANK PO exam, but in case you just clear the cut-off, does it mean that you failed?

Decide the objectives behind the goals you have set for 2019 and will achieve the goal help in fulfilling these objectives?
Time-bound – Set milestones towards achieving your goals. Keep deadlines flexible and realistic. For example, if you are attempting to give the RBI Grade B exam in June 2019, set weekly and monthly targets so that you are on track. There may always be some bumps on the road, but these can be overcome with proper planning and course correction.
Now, as you have set your SMART resolutions for 2019, you need to remember a few points:
- Try not to talk about your resolutions with anyone until you have achieved them or have formed the habit of moving towards them every day.
- STOP and try to take brief time-outs to check what you are doing. Are you on the right track?
- Keep asking yourself what else can be done to make your New Year Resolutions happen.
- Keep a track of your progress on an excel sheet or any other tool you are comfortable with
- Keep Motivating Yourself. You can applaud by treating yourself to a favorite meal or ticket to your favorite movie, however, Do Not Get Distracted.
You just have to overcome the toughest step of getting started. Once that is done, then you can keep the momentum going. Steve Jobs rightly said, “People achieve their goals because they do not quit”. Just work hard, believe in yourself and get going.
Make 2019 the year you will always remember in your life and career. It will be in your best interest to make the correct choices and execute them. Either 2019 can be the year which makes your career take off to soaring heights, or you may be looking back at the year in December 2019 and wishing you had done things differently.
