For several centuries April 1 is celebrated as APRIL FOOLS’ DAY by different cultures. People all around the world play hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools! to the recipient. April Fools’ Day is always full of fun as everyone tries to prank their friends, relatives, close ones without any guilt. With April Fool’s Day around the corner, many of us were expecting a cheerful end to the hardships that 2020 brought with it, maybe even hoping against hope that the television channels will flash a headline that would say that COVID-19 was a big fat hoax and you could go out and have fun without worrying about the deadly pandemic. Unfortunately, 2021 has other plans. There has been a huge rise in COVID-19 cases in the country. So, stay safe in your house and stay connected virtually with your friends and relatives.
History Of April Fools’ Day
- April Fools’ Day is celebrated annually on April 1 for many decades. Despite being celebrated throughout the world for decades and in various cultures, April Fools’ Day’s precise origin remains a mystery.
- There are different versions associated with April Fools’ Day. Some suggest that April Fools’ Day was first observed in 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar as the Julian calendar did not reflect the actual time the Earth takes to complete a revolution around the Sun.
- As per historians, the day started being celebrated after Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar, and ruled that the new calendar would start from January 1 back in 1952. Prior to this, New Year used to be celebrated in March-end.
- Some people continued celebrating the New Year in the end week of March or around April 1 which is the commencement of the New Year in the Julian calendar and became targets for jokes and hoaxes and were called “April Fools.” It took more than 300 years for the Gregorian calendar where New Year starts from 1st January, to be fully accepted and Turkey was the last country to officially adopt the new calendar system on January 1, 1927.
April Fool’s day around the world
- In Scotland, April Fool’s Day is celebrated over two days. Called Taily Day, The second day is devoted to pranks involving the buttocks. The “kick me” sign can be traced back to Taily Day.
- Mexico’s equivalent to April Fool’s Day is on December 28th. Originally, the day was a sombre remembrance of the slaughter of the innocent children by King Herod, though, over the years, it has evolved into a light-hearted commemoration involving pranks and tricks.
- In France, the April fool is known as ‘poisson d’avril’ (April fish). It is not known what exactly the fish refers to, but it may be related to the sun leaving Pisces (the fish) at the start of April. A part of the tradition in France was the placing of dead fish unknowingly on the backs of friends. Today, real fish have been replaced with fish-shaped paper shapes that children try to sneak onto the back of their friends’ shirts. Shops and bakeries also offer special fish-shaped sweets.
- The Dutch have separate reasons for celebrating the 1st of April. In 1572, the Netherlands was under Spanish rule. On April 1, 1572, Dutch rebels seized the town of Den Briel. This marked the start of the general civil rising against the Spanish across the Netherlands.
April Fools’ Day Significance
Now having gone through the history of April Fools’ Day, let’s analyze why April Fools’ Day is important to us. Born as a human species we love to laugh, play and prank as it soothes all our pain and suffering. We love to laugh so much that there are industries built around laughter. Jokes, sitcoms, and comedians are all designed to make us laugh, because “Laughter is the best medicine.” Playing pranks on others on April Fools’ Day gives way to laughter which can improve health and help fight disease. But at the same time, this prank can be dangerous as some people are too sensitive to handle the situation. Irresponsible pranks on others can lead to a grave consequence. On April Fools’ Day, people love to laugh, at the expense of others, but when people push the envelope and cause damage for attention or envy, the prank crosses the line.
So on this April Fools’ Day before you are planning to play a prank on any of our dear ones, know how they react to jokes because you might not cross your limit but you would be crossing someone else’s boundaries.
