Happy 73rd Independence Day!!

India will be celebrating its 73rd Independence Day on 15th August 2019. Every year we Indians celebrate this day with full enthusiasm and fervour. This day marks India’s well deserved independence from the long-standing British rule on 15th August 1947. This is why this day is also celebrated as a ‘National Holiday’. India is one of the largest democracies in the world which aims to bring secularism & freedom of speech in the forefront. Every year on 15th August, the Prime Minister of India delivers the Independence speech, popularly called the ‘Address to the Nation’ in front of thousands of people present at the Red Fort, New Delhi where the Indian flag is hoisted. To commemorate the occasion, 21 gun-shots are fired and the national anthem is also sung. The complete program is also broadcast by Doordarshan and the whole nation takes part in this extravagant celebration of India’s independence being in their respective places. March past, parades and various other pageants take place on this day which showcase the extraordinary talent of the country people and the various Indian armed forces & paramilitary forces. They also showcase India’s diverse culture in various states of India. This is the day when you actually feel patriotism flowing through your veins and you realise the essence of patriotism and unity.

Independence Day: The Real Meaning

When we talk about ‘Independence Day’, it usually means hoisting the flag at our respective schools, colleges and offices and then waiting to begin our holiday. Many of us prefer sitting back at home taking the day off from all work, some prefer enjoying the day out, some prefer reading books. Some of us enjoy watching the live telecast on TV and feel patriotic enough by being a part of the ceremony passively. Some of us even avoid going to the flag hoisting ceremony, thinking it wastes our holiday. For different people, the meaning of independence will be different. Do we really give it a thought what should we really embrace on an Independence Day? We as responsible citizens should be taking care that we do not  misuse this independence which we enjoy today which we received after a lot of struggle and efforts put by our freedom fighters. We need to know that merely getting independence from the British rule is not where it ends. We should not merely leave it to celebrations and then resuming our regular life. We somewhere fail to realize that freedom should not be limited to flag hoisting ceremonies whereas half of us are still not really free. There are some things which need to be taken care of if we really want ourselves to be free. The meaning of independence should really manifest itself in our daily lives that we lead and the philosophy with which we live by. Independence or freedom should mean the following things:

Independence therefore can be celebrated and realized in various ways. Independence is therefore freedom from all ill thoughts and negative feelings that we may have for our fellow citizens. Freedom should also mean we are free from ‘corruption’ which is a major disease inflicted on us since a long time now. Thus, freedom should not just mean you are not ruled by someone but it should also mean that you should not be ruled by the evils of bad thinking, wrong philosophy or anything that doesnt bring you closer to being ONE NATION which will lead to an economically developed and prosperous nation.

Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.

— Tryst with Destiny speech, Jawaharlal Nehru, 15 August 1947
