International Labour Day 2021
Every year on the first of May the International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is observed to honor and celebrate the achievements of workers.
It is a national holiday in many nations, including India, Bangladesh, Cuba, China, Germany, and others.
In India, it is regarded as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas (International Labour Day).
The Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan organised the first May Day in India on May 1, 1923, in Madras. Meanwhile, May Day was renamed ‘Maharashtra Day’ and ‘Gujarat Day’ in 1960 to commemorate the formation of these two states. This change was made after early known Bombay was divided on the basis of language.
International Labour Organization
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a United Nations organization. ILO provides labor perspectives and mainly aims to improve the needs of workers around the world. The ILO commemorates Labor Day with marches and protests around the world in order to raise awareness. It focuses primarily on eliminating forced labor, demanding a minimum wage law, and protecting the rights of migrant workers, among other things.
History of Labour Day
Labour Day, or Worker’s Day is regarded as a national holiday in many countries. It started as a memorial to an incident that occurred on May 4, 1886, in Chicago. The incident, known as the ‘Haymarket affair,’ was a regular gathering of people for an eight-hour work shift. The police were attempting to disperse the gathering when an anonymous person threw a bomb at the police. To this, the police retaliated by opening fire on the crowds which killed four people.
Previously, workers were oppressed because they were forced to work for 15 hours a day. It wasn’t until 1886 that they banded together and began advocating for their rights. They demanded 8 hours of work a day and paid vacations during the protest.
Labour Day In India
In India, the Hindustan Labour Kisan Party founded Labour Day in Chennai in the year 1923. On May 1, this day was established to provide workers with a nationwide holiday. Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day, the two states gained statehood on this day in 1960, after Bombay (now Mumbai) was divided along linguistic lines.
The theme of Labour Day 2021
Every year, a new theme for International Labor Day is chosen, but the theme for 2021 is soon to be announced yet. As a result, we must follow the theme for 2020, which is “maintaining safety and security at the workplace.”
How May Day is celebrated?
Processions, marches, and speeches are held on this day to honour the tireless efforts of employees and others who struggled for this demand. However, due to the COVID-19 virus, the celebrations have been suspended for this year.
Maharashtra Day 2021
On Saturday, May 1, 2021, Maharashtra celebrates its 61st foundation day. Maharashtra Day will be observed in a simple manner this year due to the second wave of coronavirus, with small ceremonies for unfurling the national flag held at various district headquarters across the state.
History of Maharashtra Day
The state of Bombay was split into two new states, Maharashtra and Gujarat, in the year 1960. The States Reorganization Act of 1956 was used to make this decision.
The demand for a separate state for Marathi-speaking citizens began in 1940. In order to gain statehood, the Samyukta Mahasabha Organisation was established (in present-day Mumbai).
Since the central problem was linguistic identity, the argument for a separate state was raised.
Until 1960, the Samyukta Maharashtra Organisation requested and protested for a separate state. In the same year, India’s Parliament passed the Bombay Reorganization Act, dividing Bombay into Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Significance of Maharashtra Day
Maharashtra celebrates the 1st of May as a public holiday every year. On this special day, educational institutions, banks, government offices, and a number of other establishments are closed. On Maharashtra Diwas, liquor sales are also prohibited in the state.
Gujarat Day 2021
Gujarat, known as the “Jewel of Western India,” has been on the world map since 1960. Gujarat was formally founded in 1960, following the publication of an impression for the state in a magazine called Kumar in 1928. K M Munshi, a freedom fighter and journalist, suggested the Mahagujarat idea first.
Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language that evolved from local Prakrits and Sanskrit. It is the official language of Gujarat.
After the Chinese cities of Chongqing and Chengdu, Ahmedabad was ranked third on Forbes’ list of the world’s fastest-growing cities in 2010. Gujarat is also where Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were born.
During the British Raj, Gujarat played a significant role in the businesses of Karachi and Mumbai. Cotton, groundnuts, sugarcane, and milk products are among the state’s main agricultural products.
The state’s electricity grid has been wired to approximately 18,000 villages for 24 hours. Yojana farms in the state are now electrified due to Jyotigra.
