National Engineers’ Day is celebrated on September 15, every year. This day marks the birth anniversary of the celebrated Indian Civil Engineer, Sir M. Visvesvaraya who was born on this day in 1860. He was also a statesman and economist.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (KCIE FASc) was an Indian engineer extraordinaire who donned many hats through the course of his professional career. He was widely recognized for his achievements both during his lifetime, and after. He is often lovingly referred to as Sir MV. He is one of India’s greatest minds of the 20th century.
He is known as the “Father of Modern Mysore State”
Some of Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s achievements have been listed below.
- He designed the automatic weir water floodgates.
- As the Chief Architect of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam, designed steel doors that would prevent unnecessary and excess water flow in dams
- He served as a Diwan of the Mysore Kingdom between 1912-1918.
- He was knighted as a Knight Commander (KCIE) in 1915.
- He received the Bharat Ratna in 1955.
Why is National Engineers’ Day Celebrated?
The day pays homage to his contribution and service, both, to science and to his country. The day is commemorated to honour Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s contributions to the field of science and engineering. He showed incomparable merit in engineering.

The theme for this year’s observance is ‘Engineering for a Healthy Planet: Celebrating the UNESCO Engineering Report.’

- Tanzania and Sri Lanka also honour Sir M. Visvesvaraya by observing September 15 as National Engineers’ Day.
- Government Engineering College was established by Sir M. Visvesvaraya in 1917. It is now known as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.
- Visvesvaraya Technological University and Visvesvaraya Institute of Advanced Technology are two institutions named after him.
- Google honoured Sir M. Visvesvaraya with a Google Doodle on his birth anniversary in 2018.
- He published several books among which his most notable works are Reconstructing India and Planned Economy for India.
