‘New India Assurance Company Limited’ or as popularly known as NIACL among the job aspirants, just concluded its NIACL AO (Generalists & Specialists) prelims examination on 30th January 2019. For some, it might have went well and for some it must have been an eye-opener. The ones who are confident enough to qualify the NIACL AO prelims phase, should be planning for their next move. NIACL AO (2018-19) Mains Exam Pattern
NIACL AO examination contains overall three stages as follows:
- Prelims
- Mains
- Interview
The NIACL AO prelims exam was held on 30th January 2019 for both Generalists & Specialists and the ones who qualify this stage will move on to the second stage to qualify the Mains exam followed by the third ‘interview’ stage. NIACL AO Mains (Generalists & Specialists) consists of objective type questions of 200 marks followed by a descriptive paper of 30 marks.

- The NIACL AO Mains exam for generalists will therefore be of 200 marks with a time duration of 2 hours.
- Except the test for English Language , the candidates will have the option to attempt all the other tests in both English and Hindi medium.

- The NIACL AO Mains exam for ‘specialists’ will also be of ‘200 marks’ with a time duration of ‘2 hours’.
- There is a difference of marking and the number of tests between the exam for generalists and specialists.
- Except for the test for English Language, the candidates will have the option to attempt all the other tests in both English and Hindi medium.
NIACL AO Mains Descriptive Paper
Like most of the important examinations these days, the NIACL AO Mains Examination also includes an ‘English Language descriptive paper’ which will test your ‘Letter and Essay Writing skills’.

The English Descriptive paper holds 30 marks and contains a composite time duration of 30 minutes. The test will also be in online mode and the candidates will be given the respective topics for letter and essay, out of which one will have to choose any one suitable topic each for both letter & essay writing.
NIACL AO Mains: Points to be noted
- You need to qualify the objective paper and clear the cut-off for each section , in order to have your ‘descriptive paper’ assessed. If you are not able to qualify the objective test, your descriptive test will not be taken into consideration.
- The ‘descriptive paper’ will be of qualifying nature and will only help in getting through the second stage and those marks will not be considered while being shortlisted for the interview.
- The ‘negative marking’ remains the same, i.e.1/4th marks will be deducted for every wrong answer .
- NIACL has introduced sectional timings only from this year, thus you need to be cautious while attempting the sections and avoid committing too many errors.
