RBI Assistant 2022: Normalisation of Scores
Generally, candidates have some confusion regarding what the ‘Normalisation process’ is and how it is done. So, we will discuss what ‘Normalisation’ is, in brief.
In India, many government/banking exams are conducted in various shifts due to the sheer volume of the candidates appearing for such exams. Therefore, the difficulty level also differs across various shifts. Hence, the Normalisation process is adopted by various recruiting bodies which organise competitive exams in multiple shifts. This is done to ensure that the performance of the candidates appearing in the competitive/banking exams is judged in an impartial manner. This process is mostly followed in the Prelims stage as the number of candidates appearing in this phase are higher in number.
How is Normalisation Done?
Normalisation is done through Equi-Percentile Method. Firstly, the percentile rank of the candidates is calculated for each shift of the exam. The formula is as follows-
Percentile Rank of the Candidate = (Total Students in a shift – Rank of the candidate in that shift) / ( Total Students in a shift – 1 ) * 100
After the calculation of the percentile, a cut-off percentile is fixed based on the number of vacancies available. Based on this cut-off score, the candidates are finally shortlisted for the next phase.
