Tips for IBPS PO Exam Preparation 2025

Planning

Proper planning is the gateway to success. Unless and until you make a proper and feasible plan for the preparation of the exam, you will find it difficult to prepare for the exam. Beating around the bush is not recommended. You should go through the IBPS PO exam syllabus and exam pattern and then make an IBPS PO preparation strategy as per your convenience of how to study and from where to study.

Be aware

You should be updated with the latest news, daily activities and events, and current affairs, for which you should read the newspapers and magazines daily. Also, there are many other resources where you can easily get access to daily, weekly, and monthly current affairs for free.  We would recommend you cover more from the banking and finance industries. You can also practice current affairs and general knowledge through our daily quizzes on General Awareness and Current Affairs for the IBPS PO exam.

Study deeply

Avoid standing on two boats at the same time. You should pick up one topic at a time and study it deeply. Do not switch to other topics just because another one hits your mind. Practice as much as you can on a particular topic to gain accuracy and speed. This should be an important part of your IBPS exam preparation.

Prepare your inventories

Prepare the charts and tables required by you and arrange for the relevant books and study material including the IBPS PO mock tests and IBPS PO previous year test papers.

Keep preparing for GK-

General Knowledge is the most important section of the IBPS exam. This section is something that doesn’t demand a dedicated time slot. You can cover General Knowledge just by adding certain habits to your routine. You can prepare for it daily by reading newspapers, magazines, current affairs, and some GK books. The pro tip is, the earlier you start the more early you will be to complete your general knowledge syllabus as part of your IBPS PO preparation. It is better to start today instead of waiting to qualify for your prelims.

This another important factor that should be considered as part of your IBPS exam preparation. Time management is an essential part of your IBPS preparation. As you have limited time to solve the question paper and to solve it on time you need adequate practice. Sometimes you have to choose smart work over hard work. Thus, you should know some tricks and shortcuts to gain an edge over the questions. Always prepare taking time into consideration. Practice various IBPS PO mock tests and test series and try to stick to the time limit. You can even practice from the previous year’s question papers.

Revise and re-evaluate yourself-

You should revise the IBPS exam syllabus a few weeks before your exam and work hard on your weak areas in the time you have left. Practicing consistently is the only solution for it. Once you have a grip on your weaker areas, no one can stop you from cracking the IBPS PO 2025 exam. Keep on attempting mock tests and test series to re-evaluate yourself and know where you stand with respect to your preparation and performance. Thorough revision should be an indispensable aspect of your preparation for IBPS PO. It will help you not just remember but know how to effectively apply those concepts to solve problems accurately.

Be confident-

Your mindset will set the tone for your entire life! It is that simple but can often be difficult. while your IBPS preparations are underway, whenever you feel yourself get overwhelmed, step back. Relax. You should be confident about yourself when you are attempting for your exam. Relax when you get nervous and start again. There comes a time when you will get nervous and start doubting your ability to attempt answers. Remember that feeling is temporary, take deeper breaths, and get back to focusing on your exam.

The IBPS PO exam, conducted annually by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection, is known for its high level of difficulty and competitiveness. Every year, numerous candidates participate in this examination, but only a few succeed. Many aspirants face multiple attempts before achieving success. With its challenging nature, the IBPS PO exam stands as one of the most competitive recruitment tests for Probationary Officers in various banks nationwide. Cracking this Exam is not an easy task, and the number of successful candidates remains significantly lower compared to those who do not make it. As the years go by, the number of candidates appearing for the Exam continues to rise, leading to an increase in the failure rate.

The IBPS PO exam is renowned for its intense competition, and despite candidates investing considerable effort and preparation, a significant number fail to qualify. Even though many candidates manage to clear the written Exam, they often struggle to perform well in the interview round, leading to their failure in securing the final selection as a Bank PO. This Exam’s difficulty level can be attributed to various factors. In this blog, we will delve into some of these reasons and shed light on the question that intrigues many aspiring candidates: “How challenging is the IBPS PO exam?”

Is IBPS PO Exam Tough

Is IBPS PO Exam Tough?

The preliminary level of the IBPS PO exam serves as a qualifying stage, where candidates need to meet the overall and sectional cut-offs to proceed to the main examination. The overall cut-off depends on factors such as the number of candidates, available seats, and the Exam’s difficulty level. While the prelims are not overly difficult to clear, regular practice of mock tests helps familiarise candidates with the exam format and enhances their chances of success. With focused preparation spanning 4-5 months, it is feasible to clear the Exam, especially for those who already possess a basic understanding of quantitative aptitude, English language, and reasoning.

Some candidates believe they can qualify for the Exam within 3-4 attempts, but the reality is that many individuals manage to clear it on their first attempt. Achieving success on the initial try requires consistent effort and practice. It is crucial for candidates to maintain a determined mindset, put in diligent practice, and make continuous efforts to increase their chances of clearing the Exam successfully.

When discussing the difficulty level of the IBPS PO exam, it is important to note that the Exam and its questions themselves are not inherently tough. The test primarily comprises basic questions in quantitative aptitude, English, and reasoning. However, the competition arises from the limited number of available seats compared to a large number of candidates, which adds a level of challenge to the overall process.

The IBPS PO exam is not inherently difficult to clear, especially if you adopt the right preparation strategy and learn from the mistakes made by others. With a focused approach, consistent practice, and a thorough understanding of the exam syllabus and pattern, aspiring candidates can improve their chances of success.

What makes the IBPS PO Exam Tough?

The IBPS PO exam is renowned as one of India’s most challenging tests. Conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) for selecting probationary officers in public sector banks, its difficulty arises from a vast syllabus, fierce competition, and a rigorous selection process. There are various factors which make the IBPS PO one of the toughest exams for candidates:

Few reasons why IBPS PO Exam is Tough

Difficulty Level and Cut-Off of the Exam

The difficulty level and cut-off of the Exam are the game changer of this IBPS PO exam. The primary thing about this Exam is you can’t have it all at once, which means an easy exam level and low cut-off can never go hand in hand. If you find your question paper easy, that will lead to a higher cut-off and vice versa.

Number of Applicants and Vacancies

Another reason the IBPS PO Exam is tough is the ratio between the number of applicants and the vacancies. As per the notification of IBPS PO Recruitment 2022, there are a total of 4135 vacancies, and the number of aspirants applying for these vacancies is more than 5 lakh.

Sectional Cut Off

The sectional cut-off is yet another reason making IBPS PO Exam challenging. According to the IBPS PO Exam Pattern, in order to qualify for each stage of the Exam, you are required to score a minimum cut-off in each section separately. This means to qualify for the stages of the IBPS PO Exam, you have to maintain a minimum cut-off score along with the overall cut-off score of the Exam.

Separate Time Duration

Time is precious, and the IBPS PO exam is the perfect proof of it. There are 2 stages possessing 3 and 5 sections, respectively. In the IBPS PO Prelims exam, to attempt 3 sections, you will have 20 minutes separately for each session. Hence, you have to do all the magic within those 20 minutes. Similarly, in the IBPS PO Mains Exam, you will get 60, 35, 40, 45 and 30 minutes separately for each section to attempt. Now you know why it is so.

Negative Marking

You need to be sure about your answers. Yes, IBPS PO Exam requires confidence and accuracy, not just a mere attempt at the questions. You will witness negative markings for attempting answers incorrectly, and you will not lose or gain anything if you leave any questions unanswered. Hence, the IBPS PO exams demand you to be confident with your answer. One wrong answer and you will lose 0.25 marks for it.

There is no need to get these aspects to your nerves; remember, things can be tough but not impossible. To excel in the IBPS PO exam, candidates must possess a robust understanding of subjects such as economics, finance, banking, and current affairs. The Exam’s pattern and syllabus are strategically designed to evaluate candidates’ knowledge, analytical prowess, and problem-solving capabilities. In this post, we present expert-curated tips to assist aspiring candidates in successfully cracking this esteemed examination.

Read these 10 Tips that can help you crack any bank exam to become a Bank Officer

Being a bank officer is considered to be a dream job for many in the country and is coveted by so many aspirants who flock to attempt the entrance examinations. Examinations for all banks including SBI, RBI, Canara, Corporation and other regional nationalized banks are equally competitive and hard to qualify. So it is imperative that you stand out from the crow by taking a meticulous approach towards the exam.

Tips to Crack Any Bank Exam

Tips to Crack Any Bank Exam

So here are 10 tips that will help you to crack any Banking Exam and help you achieve your dream of becoming a bank officer.

Properly analyze the syllabus

First things first, before attempting any examination it is important to determine what to study. So going through the syllabus is important. It is important to cross-verify the syllabus with more than one source, as there is always the possibility of misinformation. In some instances, students would be underprepared or inadequately prepared, when they fail to notice changes in a syllabus for that year. This would be counterproductive as you would be spending months preparing for syllabi and topics that have been omitted or modified for that year. The best thing to do is to reach out to the official website of each bank to determine the exact syllabus.

Make a study plan

The next step is to create a study plan. The following factors must be taken into consideration when preparing a plan:

  1. How much time is remaining?
  2. How much of the syllabus are you familiar with?
  3. What resources do you have to prepare for the exam?
  4. Is the plan realistic?

Without a realistic plan, you are never going to get anywhere, so make sure that you factor in limitations and give room for slippage so as to make the plan as relevant and realistic as possible.

Execute the plan

No matter how solid and good your plan is, you will see no success if it isn’t executed. So make sure that you put in the stipulated hours per day to learn. This is often the part that is the toughest as it requires a lot of hard work. Stick to your plan and don’t let distractions intervene.

Solve past question papers

This is the easiest way to familiarize yourself with the quality of the examination and the type of questions that you will be asked. Moreover, this is probably the only best free resource that you are going to receive with regard to the examination. So make sure that you attempt the past three years’ question papers to kick-start your evaluation of your readiness.

Take mock tests

This is very important. The old adage ‘practice makes perfect‘ is highly underappreciated, as candidates assume that their preparation is sufficient to pull them through. You will be surprised at the results when taking your first mock test. You may be under the impression that you have covered all topics but still get so many questions wrong. This is why mock tests are important as they let you gauge your level of preparation. Plus by taking multiple mock tests, you will be able to cover potential questions from a wide range of topics in the examination. Mock tests also help build the speed at which you answer questions. This will help you fine-tune your preparations.

Create an exam plan

It isn’t sufficient to plan to study in case of such a competitive exam. In many instances, you will see candidates with excellent levels of preparation struggle in the exams as they can get what’s in their head onto the paper. This is because of stress that is a result of poor exam preparation. While a mock test can provide you with some level of confidence in your ability and gauge your level of readiness for the exams, they are attempted in the comfort of your home. An actual examination is different as it takes place in real-time in a different environment. The psychological aspects are what makes or break your exam success.

In an exam plan, you must categorize portions of the syllabus based on your knowledge and comfort level with these topics and prioritize them. Take the topics that you are very comfortable with and prioritize completing these questions first. Then move on to the other segments. Leave all the questions that you find hard or uncertain about for the end.

Practice time management

Another critical aspect of bank exams is time management. The luxury of solving past years’ question papers is that you get unlimited time to work on them. But in the exam, you have to stick to a strict deadline, which can add to the pressure. So make sure that you clock your mock tests and past question papers and find out areas on which you need to work on so that you have enough information to work out a plan to eliminate these troubling areas.

Don’t Guess

People often figure that with multiple choice questions they can get away or score some extra marks by simply guessing answers to questions they don’t know. Keep in mind that most bank exams have negative markings so guessing going to do you more harm than good. So just skip the questions that you don’t know instead of attempting a blind guess.

Avoid wastage of time

Reading long comprehension questions, rereading tough questions and doing too much mental math are all going to waste your time in the exam. Keep the long questions for the last and perform all the math physically on the side of the answer sheet in a rough section. This will surely help save time.

Talk to people who have qualified

Scout your network and find out if someone has cleared the exams. Not only will you be able to gain great insights and tips from them but you will also be supercharged with motivation on hearing their success story.

Appearing for a government exam might look like a challenge at the outset. The competition is quite tough and the syllabus is vast. This is not to discourage you, rather, we have the resources that you can make use of at any stage of your preparation. Two of these resources are free mock tests and the previous years’ question papers.

Free Mock Tests

Why Should You Take a Free Mock Test?

There are several reasons why you should take a mock test during your preparation stage. Some of them are:

  • It helps you understand and analyze the exam pattern.
  • It helps you gauge the standard of assessment.
  • It gives you a fair idea about your own preparation.
  • You can evaluate your speed and efficiency if you time yourself during a mock test.
  • You can identify which section(s) are taking you longer to complete than others.
  • Accordingly, you can manage your time especially for exams where there is no sectional division of time.
  • It gives you a feel of the real full-length exam.
  • You can revise the entire syllabus in one sitting.
  • Routinely practicing mock tests will boost your confidence and eliminate nervousness on the actual exam day.

At ixamBee, you can find a range of free mock tests for competitive exams. These mock tests are completely free and you can take as many of these as you like. For your benefit, we have listed some of the upcoming exams for which you can take free mock tests.

Previous Years’ Papers

Why should you review Previous Years’ Papers?

Like mock tests, previous years’ papers are also useful when preparing for any examination. Unlike a mock test, previous years’ papers provide you with such questions that were actually asked in the most recent exam. This will help your overall preparation in several ways.

  • It helps you understand how many questions you may expect per topic from each section.
  • It helps you understand the latest trends in the exam you will be appearing for.
  • Reviewing solved papers also gives you an idea concerning how to go about the questions.
  • Studying the descriptive sections of the paper gives you a fair idea about how you can frame your answers.
  • While reviewing the papers, if you feel you had a fair idea about most of the answers, it automatically builds confidence in you.

You can go through some of the previous years’ papers of some currently important exams:

If you are preparing for any competitive exams, ixamBee has all the resources you need. Aside from the mock tests and previous years’ papers as discussed above, we offer a number of online courses that you can pick from for an exam of your choice. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection conducts national-level exams for various banking posts every year. This year, IBPS has announced 6827 openings for the post of IBPS RRB PO (Group B Office Assistant). This exam is attempted by thousands of candidates from all over the country. It is a relatively easy exam where the level of assessment is moderate to easy.

IBPS RRB PO 2021

In this article, we will discuss how to prepare for the Quantitative Aptitude section of RRB PO. We will give you some useful tips that you can apply both during the preparation stage and in the actual exam. Quants is a very important topic because it is tested in both the Prelims and the Mains. Before we begin, let us briefly understand the IBPS RRB PO Exam Pattern.

IBPS RRB PO 2021 Exam Pattern

The exam is conducted in 3 parts.

  1. Prelims
  2. Mains
  3. Interview

Prelims: The Prelims paper is assessed for 80 marks. The paper has two sections that test Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude respectively. Each section is assessed for 40 marks and contains 40 questions each. The total time given is 45 minutes.

Mains: The Prelims paper is for 200 marks and the time given is 120 minutes. The subjects assessed in this paper are Reasoning, Computer Knowledge, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and Language (English/Hindi).

IBPS RRB 2020 Quants Overview

Provided below is a table depicting the topic-wise distribution of questions for Quantitative Aptitude in last year’s exam. This will help us understand which topics are more important and how we should go about our exam preparation.

CHAPTERNo. of Questions in 2019No. of Questions in 2020
Simplification/Approximation4-5
DI (tables and bar graphs)1012
Number Series65
Quadratic Equations64-5
Data Sufficiency/Quantity Comparison54-5
Arithmetic1310-11

While the other topics are fairly distributed, as you can see the maximum number of questions are assessed from Data Interpretation and Arithmetic.

How to Prepare Quants for IBPS RRB PO 2021

  • Start with easier topics
Start with easier topics like Simplification, Series and Quadratic Equations. As you have seen, between 4 and 6 questions were asked from these topics in the last two years. You can expect questions from at least 2 of these topics if not all three. Although there are 40 questions in this section you can expect questions on all 3 as well. You can expect questions for 10 marks from these easy topics.
  • Practice DI daily
DI is a very important topic for Quantitative Aptitude. You may expect 2 or 3 sets for a total of 10-12 marks. Not only is it important, but also requires lots of practice. You should practice DI once every day or at least once in two days. At a stretch, you must dedicate an hour or more to it. This is because DI questions involve calculations that cannot be done off-hand during the exam if you don’t practice it well.
  • Arithmetic is the deal maker
In Quants, you must try to attempt at least 35-36 questions so that you may expect to score at least 34/35 marks in this section. Arithmetic is a simple topic that involves a range of questions on Percentage, Time & Work, Age, Time & Distance and such. From among these, you may expect 1 or 2 questions each as part of the larger ‘Arithmetic’ umbrella.
  • Clear your concepts
While fewer questions are asked from Arithmetic per topic, these questions are easy and scoring. Even if you are well-versed in the basics of these topics, you can score well. In a highly competitive exam such as this, it should not come as any surprise that every mark matters. So, if you practice your math-based questions well, you can try to obtain full marks here.
  • The key is to practice well
You can only solve questions quickly and correctly through rigorous practice.
  • Focus on Data Sufficiency
This is a comparatively easier topic because here there are no calculations involved. You have to study the data provided and answer if the data provided is sufficient to answer the successive questions/statements or not. If your concepts are clear, this is a scoring topic.

In this article, we have only discussed Quants for IBPS RRB PO. However, you need to work on all the sections because there are subject-wise cut-offs as well.
