Important Points to Remember

For the SBI PO Prelims exam, out of 35 questions, 23-24 questions will be asked from the below mentioned first 4 topics. The remaining questions will be from Arithmetic Word Problems.

Some calculation tricks that you must know if you are appearing for the SBI PO exam are provided below. These tricks will definitely help you in increasing your speed and you will be able to attempt more questions in the exam. 

Trick #1 

Square of the numbers ending with 5.

We can find the Square of any number whose last digit is 5.

Just write 25 in the end & multiply the digit ahead of 5 to its next place & put the product before 25. Simply you will get the final answer

It means, n5² = n(n+1)/25

So, 45² = 4×5/25 = 2025

55² = 5×6/25 = 3025

65² = 6×7/25 = 4225

105² = 10×11/25 = 11025

Trick #2 

Square of numbers near to 50.

If the number is more than 50, then

(50+n)² = (25+n)/n²

In the end n² must have only 2 digits. If it has only 1 digit like 3² =9, we will write it as 09.

If it has 3 digits like 12² = 144 then write 44 in the end only & carry 1 in (25+n)

It means 53² = (50+3)² = 25+3/3² = 2809

52² = (50+2)² = 25+2/2² = 2704

56² = (50+6)² = 25+6/6² = 3136

62² = (50+12)² = 25+12/12² = 37/144 = 37+1/44 = 3844

64² = (50+14)² = 25+14/14² = 39/196 = 39+1/96 = 4096

If the number is less than 50, then

(50-n)² = (25-n)/n²

In the end n² must have only 2 digits. If it has only 1 digit like 3² =9, we will write it as 09.

If it has 3 digits like 12² = 144 then write 44 in the end only & carry 1 in (25+n)

It means 47² = (50-3)² = 25-3/3² = 2209

48² = (50-2)² = 25-2/2² = 2304

44² = (50-6)² = 25-6/6² = 1936

38² = (50-12)² = 25-12/12² = 13/144 = 13+1/44 = 1444

36² = (50-14)² = 25-14/14² = 11/196 = 11+1/96 = 1296

Trick #3

Square of numbers near to 100.

If the number is more than 100, then

(100+n)² = (100+n+n)/n²

In the end n² must have only 2 digits. If it has only 1 digit like 3² =9, we will write it as 09.

If it has 3 digits like 12² = 144 then write 44 in the end only & carry 1 in (100+n+n)

It means 103² = (100+3)² =100+3+3/3² = 10609

102² = (100+2)² =100+2+2/2² = 10404

106² = (100+6)² =100+6+6/6² = 11236

112² = (100+12)² = 100+12+12/12² = 124/144 = 124+1/44 = 12544

114² = (100+14)² = 100+14+14/14² = 128/196 = 128+1/96 = 12996

If the number is less than 100, then

(100-n)² = (100-n-n)/n²

In the end n² must have only 2 digits. If it has only 1 digit like 3² =9, we will write it as 09.

If it has 3 digits like 12² = 144 then write 44 in the end only & carry 1 in (100-n-n)

It means 97² = (100-3)² =100-3-3/3² = 9409

98² = (100-2)² =100-2-2/2² =9604

94² = (100-6)² =100-6-6/6² = 8836

88² = (100-12)² = 100-12-12/12² = 76/144 = 76+1/44 = 7744

86² = (100-14)² = 100-14-14/14² = 72/196 = 72+1/96 = 7396

Some Other Tips

1. Memorize squares upto 50 (minimum 30)
2. Memorize cubes upto 20
3. Memorize multiplication tables upto 20
4. Percentage to fraction conversion and vice versa
5. Practice DI/Simplification/Approximation/Number Series and Quadratic equations problems every day. 

How to Approach Quantitative Aptitude section.

1. Try to solve the easy problems first and then gradually move to the Moderate/Difficult ones. 
2. In continuation with the last point, attempt questions from Approximation/ Simplification, Quadratic Equations and Number Series first as these take comparatively lesser time. 
3. Don’t spend undue time on analyzing the pattern of the number series, just give it a quick read and if you get the pattern go ahead, otherwise skip and move to next.
4. Attempt DI only if you have practiced well. If you haven’t practiced enough, try to solve the rest of the questions first and then move into this section as it can be quite time-consuming.  
5. Don’t spend too much time on one question. If you don’t know the answer, move on to the next. 
6. Accuracy is key. While it is important to answer as many questions as you can, it is imperative that you answer these questions correctly to score marks. 

Solved Sample Questions

In this section, we have compiled some solved examples for your perusal. Take a look at them below. 

1. What will come in place of the question mark (?) in the following series?

8, 17, 36, 75, ?, 313

Solution: 

8 × 2 + 1 = 17

17 × 2 + 2 = 36

36 × 2 + 3 = 75

75 × 2 + 4 = 154

154 × 2 + 5 = 313

Answer: 154

2.  ‘n’ men working 18 hours a day can complete a work in 24 days while (5n – 4) men working 12 hours a day can complete the same work in 9 days. In how many days can (n + 4) men working 6 hours a day complete the same work?

Solution:

According to the question,

(n × 18 × 24) = {(5n – 4) × 12 × 9}

Or, 4n = 5n – 4

Or, n = 4

Let the number of days taken by (n + 4) = 8 men be ‘x’ days

Therefore,

(8 × 18 × 24) = (8 × 6 × x)

Therefore, x = 72 days

Answer: 72 days

3.  A man invested Rs. 2x and Rs. 4x at 10% simple interest and at 5% compound interest (compounded annually) for two years respectively. Difference between simple interest and compound interest received after two years is Rs.680. Find the value of x.

Solution: 

According to the question,

=> [4x (1.05)² – 4x] – (2x × 10 × 2)/100 = 680

=> [4.41x – 4x] – (4x/10) = 680

=> 0.1x = 6800

=> x = Rs. 68000

Answer: Rs 68,000

4.  Average of present ages of A and B is 30 years. Ratio of age of A to age of B, after 10 years will be 7:9, respectively. What will be the ratio of their ages 5 years ago?

Solution: 

Let, present age of A is ‘x’ years

Present age of B = 30 × 2 – x = ‘60 – x’ years

According to question;

(x + 10)/(60 – x + 10) = 7/9

Or, 9x + 90 = 490 – 7x

Or, 16x = 400

Or, x = 25

Desired ratio = (25 – 5) :(60 – 25 – 5) = 20:30 = 2:3

Answer: 2:3
