Answering comprehension questions often involves analyzing and interpreting information from the given passages. Banks seek candidates with strong analytical skills to make sound decisions. Reading comprehension tests the candidate’s ability to understand and communicate ideas effectively. These questions assess the ability to make logical inferences based on given information.

So, we can say that, English Reading Comprehension questions in bank exams serve as a comprehensive way to evaluate a candidate’s language skills, critical thinking abilities, and suitability for roles that demand effective communication and analytical skill within the banking sector.

In today’s article, I have provided 1 set (5 questions) of moderate to difficult level of Reading Comprehension questions which is expected to be solved in 5 to 10 minutes. These questions will be helpful in the upcoming examinations of SBI PO, SEBI Grade A, and IBPS PO exams.

Reading comprehension is one of the scoring topics in the English language section. You can easily find at least 8 to 10 questions in the Prelims as well as Mains of any banking or competitive examinations. Practice is the only way to conquer this topic. Answers with detailed solutions have been provided at the end of the questions. Let’s look at the paragraph below:

Passage

You can seek investment advice from both banks and individual wealth managers. Banks, however, have historically proven to be highly controversial as wealth managers. (3) A sales culture (i) driven by profit maximization and commissions has often come at the (ii) products of clients. Most of the large banks have been (iii) seen to patronize the (iv) expense of their subsidiaries (asset management companies and insurance companies). However, banks are ideally placed to cater to the all-round needs of a client. (4) On the one hand, Wealth managers today need to look at all the aspects of a customer’s (i) investment well-being and not restrict themselves to a particular (ii) financial or insurance offering. With a (iii) significant shift in the (iv) regulatory landscape and risk-return matrix, some practices have become must-have for wealth managers. These include an established framework of sound processes for understanding the risk preferences of clients and doing the due diligence in choosing products, particularly when the products are from the group entities of the distributor. Wealth managers must also ensure focus on balanced performance metrics (non-revenue centric) for their relationship managers, safeguarding fair client outcomes.(5) Established banks are, however, ideally (i) unique to deliver the above outcomes, especially given the significant (ii) focus on compliance and reputation, and the scale and (iii) stability they provide. Also, given the (iv) placed 360-degree view they have of the client, banks are able to tailor multiple solutions to meet clients’ needs fully.

When we talk of the theme, we need to see what is the underlying message of the author. What is that one sentence which will summarize the entire passage. Option (b) summarizes the entire passage as the passage talks of both, banks and wealth managers. In the last para, it indicates that banks are positioned to meet the objectives that wealth managers need to achieve.

The best way to know about the tone of the passage is to understand what the author wants you to feel when you read the passage. The entire passage takes the side of banks. The 1^st para introduces the problem, the 2^nd problem informs the various aspects that wealth managers need to do and the 3^rd para again supports the banks. Hence, the passage takes the  side of banks.

Ans 3. (3)

For the word marked (iv), “patronize the expense” is incorrect as “patronize” means “to put down” and one cannot “put down” an expense. The best position for “expense” is at (ii) as we talk about “expense of clients” and the other phrase will be “products of the subsidiaries”. Hence, (ii) and (iv) need to be replaced with each other.

For the word marked (i), “customer’s investment well-being” doesn’t make sense as “investment well being” is incorrect. The best replacement is at (ii) after which we will have “customer’s financial well being” and “particular investment or insurance offering”. Hence, (i) and (ii) need to be replaced with each other.

In (iv), “given the placed 360-degree view” is incorrect as the word “placed” is replacing “360-degree view”. The best replacement is at (i) after which we will have “are, however, ideally placed to deliver” and “Also, given the unique 360-degree view”. Hence, (i) and (iv) need to be replaced with each other.

The analysis of the SBI Clerk previous year question papers makes it very simple to determine that series questions are a significant part of the quantitative capacity section. For this year’s paper, this is unlikely to change too.

Series Questions

• A series of numbers is given in such questions. They are all connected.
• Best of all, the solution to the problem becomes a cakewalk once you identify the pattern.
• There can be many patterns. namely.,
  • Prime Numbers
  • Squares/ Cubes
  • Patterns in differences
  • Pattern in alternate numbers
  • Geometric series 
  • Odd one out

• Don’t hurry to solve those problems. Give yourself some time and 100 percent precision.
• Be careful, you could end up spending 10-15 minutes and still have no answer if you don’t practice such a question. This will cost you not only marks, but also you will end on poorly handling the other parts of the paper.
• So here’s the mantra, practise and practise. Begin by examining the basic series questions.
• Solve five series questions per day for the rest of the days. This will increase your pace, increase your exposure to many series combinations and you will also be ready for the most difficult seating arrangement questions by the time you take the examination.

Data Interpretation

• One of the key sections of the Quantitative Aptitude section is Data Interpretation.
• If you follow the recent trend of questions, the Quantitative section will certainly have one or more DI questions.
• Carefully read the questions and consider what is being asked. Do not begin to solve the question and figures as soon as you see them. Read what is being asked, and grasp it. Sometimes a couple of questions will occur that will not require even calculations.
• Check your option. Some questions will often be relatively easier to resolve than others. Identify and address these problems quickly.
• Take one question at a time to answer. Do not think about the next or the previous question otherwise you will end up intentionally wasting time and solving the question incorrectly.
• Take a look at the whole question and move on to the next question if you think it takes longer to solve.

Data Sufficiency

• Read the statements and don’t assume by seeing the data alone.
• Don’t solve the problem: Ask yourself if the information in the statements will answer the query. These issues do not require extensive and comprehensive calculations. But if you still do a lot of calculations, surely there is something you are not seeing.
• Use and merge the first statement with the main statement. If you get an answer, it is enough to respond to the first statement.
• If the first statement is not enough to find the answer, take individually the second statement and combine it with the main statement. If you can get the answer then it is enough to answer by the second statement alone.

SBI Clerk Quantitative Aptitude: Important Tips to Follow

• Practice 1-2 Data Interpretation questions daily.
• Learn tables up to 20, Squares up to 40, and Cubes up to 20.
• Learn all calculation tricks, multiplication, addition tricks and such.
• Simplification, Series & Quadratic Equations: Practice them at a stretch for the next 10 days. They carry 15 marks weightage. The more types of questions you solve from these subjects, the faster you will be able to solve them during your exam.
• Arithmetic chapters will be a game-changer for you. So practice as many questions as you can from a single topic. You will be asked several questions from Arithmetic Word Problems that are generally easy to solve as long as you practice them enough.
• You cannot answer any question wrong in such competitions. Be accurate in whatever you are doing in one go.

SBI Clerk 2021: Admit Card

The SBI Clerk 2021 Admit Cards have been made available as of June 29, 2021. The window to download the call letters will remain open till July 13, 2021. Now that the exam is to be held soon, use your time well in this last lap of your preparation.

SBI Clerk 2021: Vacancy

With the announcement of the SBI Junior Associates notification, the  SBI Clerk 2021 vacancies stand at 5237, 5000 vacancies have been announced for regular posts and 237 for Backlog posts. The number of vacancies for SBI JA recruitment 2020 was 8134.

SBI Clerk 2021: Exam Pattern

As per the SBI official notification “No minimum qualifying marks for individual subjects are prescribed.” Thus, there will not be any sectional cut-off for this year’s SBI Junior Associates Recruitment’s Online Examination. However, the final decision concerning the cut-off criteria rests solely with the organization.  

SBI Clerk Exam 2021 will be conducted in two phases, Prelims and Mains. The fact that there will be no interview is the best part of the SBI Clerk Exam. However, candidates must pass the SBI Clerk Prelims and Mains Exams. A sectional timing will be there. SBI JA Exam 2021 questions will all be objective, i.e. multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

SBI Clerk Prelims Exam Pattern

SBI Clerk Mains Exam Pattern

The SBI Clerk mains exam 2021 has four sections: General/ Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude. There will be a total of 190 questions on the test paper. The exam has a total of 200 marks. The duration of the exam is 2 hours and 40 minutes. Each section has a set of sectional timings.

SBI Clerk 2021: Exam Final Score Calculation

The final score for the SBI Clerk exam is calculated based on the following important factors:

• The Preliminary Exam marks will not be factored into the final grade. These are only used to qualify for the Mains Exam.
• To advance to Phase 2 candidates must first qualify for the Phase 1 exam
• The final merit list for each category is based on a total of 100 points. Finally, candidates with a high merit rank in each category are chosen.

Language Proficiency Test (LPT): Those who qualify for selection and have a class 10 or 12 marks sheet/certificate demonstrating that they have studied the specified opted local language will not be required to take a language test. Others (qualified for selection) will undergo a specified opted local language test after provisional selection but before joining. Candidates who are not found to be fluent in the chosen local language will be disqualified.

SBI Clerk 2021: Eligibility Criteria

As of April 1, 2021, a candidate must be at least 20 years old but not more than 28 years old to apply for the SBI examination. Aside from that, according to government rules, there is age relaxation for certain categories of candidates:

Important Points in Eligibility Criteria

• OBC applicants belonging to the ‘’Non-creamy layer” are eligible for vacancies reserved for the OBC group. Candidates that fall into the OBC category but are in the ‘’CREAMY LAYER” are not eligible for any of the OBC category’s relaxations or reservations. As appropriate, they should indicate their category as General OR General (LD/ VI/ HI/ d&e).
• If selected, OBC candidates must submit an OBC certificate in the format prescribed by the Government of India, with the “Non-Creamy Layer” provision, issued between April 1, 2021, and the date of appointment.
• Reservation benefits under the EWS category can be obtained by presenting an ‘Income and Asset Certificate’ issued by a Competent Authority in the format prescribed by the Government of India for the applicable fiscal year, as per the current DoPT guidelines.
• Candidates for the EWS should be aware that if they do not have a “Income & Assets Certificate” for the relevant financial year as per the current DoPT guidelines on or before the online application deadline, they should apply under the “General (GEN) category only.”
• Candidates in the Clerical or Officer cadres of the SBI are not eligible to apply for this venture. Candidates who were previously employed by the State Bank of India and resigned while in the clerical or officer cadre are also ineligible to apply.
• Candidates who have received a negative report about their character and antecedents, moral turpitude, or other issues are ineligible to apply for the role.
• Candidates with a history of defaulting on loan or credit card payments, as well as those with a CIBIL or other agency adverse report against their name, may not be considered for appointment. Before joining, the status in this regard will be confirmed.

SBI Clerk 2021: Educational Qualifications

1. He or she must have a valid degree from a recognized university in any discipline on or before August 16, 2021.
2. Candidates who hold an integrated dual degree (IDD) certificate should double-check the date of their IDD completion. Those in their final year/semester of study may also apply provisionally, subject to the requirement that, if provisionally selected, they produce proof of passing the graduation examination.
3. Matriculate ex-servicemen who have completed at least 15 years of service in the Union Armed Forces and have obtained the Indian Army Special Certificate of Education or a corresponding certificate in the Navy or Air Force are also eligible.

SBI Clerk 2021: Application Form & Fees

SBI Clerk 2021 application form needs to be filled online. The link to register for the exam will be made available on the official website. The application fee is 750 and NIL for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD category.

Candidates can fill SBI Clerk application form as per the below-mentioned steps. 

Step 1: Go to sbi.co.in/web/careers/current-openings on the official website.

Step 2: Go to the ‘Click here for new registration‘ tab and click it.

Step 3: Enter information such as your name, phone number, and email address.

Step 4: You’ll get a registration number and a password.

Step 5: Upload the scanned images of the signature and photograph.

Step 6: Fill in your personal information, work experience, educational qualifications, and so on.

Step 7: Review the application form before submitting your information.

Step 8: The registration fees must be paid by the candidates.

Step 9: Print the application form as well as the E-receipt.

SBI Clerk 2021: Important Details

• In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bank can conduct the PET either through physical classes or through online resources, depending on the feasibility.
• The admit cards for the preliminary exam have been made available. Candidates can download their call letter and a “acquaint yourself booklet” for the preliminary test by entering their registration number and password/date of birth on the Bank’s website.
• From 19.07.2021 onwards (Tentatively), candidates who will qualify for the main examination will be able to download their call letter from the Bank’s website (following the instructions on the screen).
• Call letter for Preliminary Exam: Call letter of the Preliminary Exam will not be collected at the examination venue. However, it will be duly authenticated or Stamped by the exam center staff. Candidates will need to retain the call letter (along with authenticated/ stamped copy of the ID proof) safely. Those candidates who will be called for Main Exam will be required to bring this call letter along with the Main Exam call letter and other requisite documents as per information provided in the “acquaint yourself booklet” and call letter.

Money Lenders:

Moneylenders are defined as those whose primary business is to lend money. They are classified in two ways i.e. the Professional Moneylenders such as Sahukars, Banias, and The Maharajas. They usually hold a license for money lending. The second one is the Non-Professional Moneylenders, they don’t entirely depend on money lending business and also don’t hold a license for money lending, those are Landlords, Agriculturists, Traders, pensioners, etc.

Indigenous Banks:

From ancient days, India has had been into some form of banking also known as Indigenous banking. It was organized in the form of family or individual businesses. Those who were into this business were popularly known as Shroffs, Mahajans, Chettis, Sahukars, Kathiwlais’s, etc. it cannot be mixed with the professional money lenders because their work is not only to lend money. Because their activities were not regulated, they belong to the unorganized sector. The functions of indigenous banks are accepting deposits, lending money or advance loans, acceptance of valuable for custody and some Non-Banking functions.

Organized Banking:

Reserve Bank of India (RBI):

Reserve Bank of India is the apex organization of our country. It is also known as the Central Bank of India. RBI came into existence on April 01, 1935, with Reserve Bank of India Regulation Act 1934. It was nationalized by the Government of India on January 01, 1949. Scheduled banks and Non-Scheduled banks:

Those banks that have entered into the Second Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India Act 1934 have been classified as scheduled banks and those are excluded from the list are termed as Non-Scheduled Banks.

Commercial Banks

Commercial Banks are the type of banks whose primary objective is to accept deposits and advance loans to the customers (General Public, Corporate and government). Commercial Banks are regulated under the Banking Regulation Act 1949. This act gives extensive regularity powers to Reserve Bank of India over Commercial Banks. It also entitled it to inspect their workings.

In other words, we can say that a Commercial Bank is a financial institution that accepts deposits, grants loans. It borrows money from those who have money in surplus and lends to those who need it. The first commercial bank in India was established in 1770, Bank of Hindustan. Punjab national bank, Axis bank, Dena bank Union bank and syndicate bank, etc. are some of the commercial banks operated in India.

Some of the major functions of Commercial Banks are given below:

1. It receives deposits from public and business firms.
2. It issues demand drafts, bank cards traveler’s cheque, etc.
3. It lends money to an individual, corporate and government for a productive economy.
4. It provides the locker facility to the customers.  
5. It provides safe custody of documents, ornaments, and other valuables.

Public Sector Banks:

Public Sector Banks which are also known as nationalized banks are the banks in which the majority of stakes are of the government of India. The Government of India nationalized 20 privately owned banks in 1969 and 1980.  The objectives of nationalization of banks are to raise public confidence in the banking system. Reach of banking services in urban as well as rural services. To ensure the availability of resources to important sectors of society like agriculture and small scale industries.  State bank of India, apart from being a nationalized bank also acts as the agent of RBI.

Private Sector Banks:

Private Sector Banks are the type of banks in which majorly stakes are owned by the private sector. In 1951, there were 566 private sector banks operating in India, out of which 474 were Non-Scheduled and 92 Scheduled banks. Some of the private sector banks operating in India are Karur Vyasa Bank, City Union Bank, Nainital Bank, and Karnataka Bank, etc.

Foreign Banks:

Foreign Banks in India are the ones whose head office is outside the geographical boundaries of India. They are governed by the rules of the parent country, whereas, the branches operating in India have to strictly follow the rules of Reserve Bank of India.

Regional Rural banks:

Regional Rural Banks on RRB were set up by the government of India on September 26, 1975, under the Regional Rural Banks Act 1976. The main objective of the bank is to provide credit and other facilities to the small and marginal farmers, agricultural laborers, artisans. It also aims to develop trade, agriculture, commerce, and industry, etc. in the rural areas. At the moment, the authorized capital of RRB is Rs. 5 crore and the issued capital is Rupees 1 crore. 50% of the issued capital is to be provided by the central government, 15% by the concerned state and the rest 35% will be sponsored by the sponsoring commercial bank. The shares of Regional Rural Banks are to be counted as “Approved Securities”.
