कर्तृवाच्य क्रिया के उस रूपान्तर को कर्तृवाच्य कहते हैं, जिससे वाक्य में कर्ता की प्रधानता का बोध हो। सरल शब्दों में, क्रिया के जिस रूप में कर्ता प्रधान हो और सकर्मक और अकर्मक दोनों क्रियाए हो, उसे कर्तृवाच्य कहते हैं।
क्रिया के जिस रूप में कर्म प्रधान हो, उसे कर्मवाच्य कहते हैं या जहाँ क्रिया का संबंध सीधा कर्म से हो तथा क्रिया का लिंग तथा वचन कर्म के अनुसार हो, उसे कर्मवाच्य कहते हैं। मीरा ने दूध पीया। मीरा ने पत्र लिखा।
क्रिया के उस रूपान्तर को भाववाच्य कहते हैं, जिससे वाक्य में क्रिया अथवा भाव की प्रधानता का बोध हो। दूसरे शब्दों में- क्रिया के जिस रूप में न तो कर्ता की प्रधानता हो न कर्म की, बल्कि क्रिया का भाव ही प्रधान हो, वहा भाववाच्य होता है। मोहन से टहला भी नहीं जाता। मुझसे उठा नहीं जाता।
