In the Hill reaction, an artificial electron acceptor, such as ferricyanide (Fe(CN)₆³⁻), is used to accept electrons from the photosystem II complex in the presence of light. Ferricyanide is a strong oxidizing agent that can accept electrons and become reduced during the reaction.
