The Centre has decided to further reduce the jurisdiction of ‘ disturbed areas ’ under the Armed Forces ( Special Powers ) Act, 1958 ( AFSPA ) in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur . Last year, the Centre removed AFSPA from several districts across Assam, Nagaland and Manipur . While the notification was removed from the entire state of Assam, except nine districts and one sub - division of another district; in Manipur, 15 police station areas of six districts were taken out of the disturbed area notification; and in Nagaland, it was withdrawn from 15 police stations of seven districts . The Ministry of Home Affairs had issued two separate gazette notifications, extending for six months the disturbed area status in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland under the AFSPA . About AFSPA Armed Forces ( Special Powers ) Act, 1958 is an act of the Parliament of India that grants special powers to the Indian Armed Forces to maintain public order in " disturbed areas ". According to the Disturbed Areas Act, 1976 once declared 'disturbed', the area has to maintain status quo for a minimum of 3 months .
