The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has notified two new Quality Control Orders (QCOs) on Potable Water Bottles and Flame-Producing Lighters. The QCO for Potable Water Bottles mandates compulsory certification under the appropriate IS Standard for the production and import of bottles made of copper, stainless steel, or aluminium. The QCO for Flame-Producing Lighters mandates compulsory certification under IS Standards for safety specifications of lighters manufactured or imported into India. Relaxations in implementing the QCOs have been granted to support domestic micro and small industries. DPIIT aims to establish a comprehensive quality control regime to curb the import of sub-standard products, ensure consumer safety, and promote "Make in India" products. DPIIT has collaborated with the Bureau of Indian Standards to develop 64 new QCOs covering 317 product standards.
