Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani, launched a scheme for pregnant minor victims of sexual assault without family support. The scheme aims to provide shelter, food, legal aid, and transportation for court hearings to minor girls abandoned due to forced pregnancy. The scheme has an approved outlay of Rs 74.10 crore and will be applicable nationwide. In 2021, 51,863 cases were reported under the POCSO Act, with 64% related to penetrative sexual assault and aggravated penetrative sexual assault. The scheme will help set up shelters for victims, either standalone or within existing child care institutions. Integrated support and assistance will be provided to minor victims under one roof. The scheme leverages the administrative structure of Mission Vatsalya and POCSO fast track courts established by the government. The support will be available to child care institutions up to 18 years and after-care facilities up to 23 years.
