• China leads  with  38,210 GenAI patents , followed by the  US  ( 6,276 ) ,  Republic of Korea  ( 4,155 ) , and  Japan  ( 3,409 ) .
•   India ranks fifth  with  1,350 GenAI patents  from  2014 to 2023 , holding a  3 %  share  of the total .
• Despite no Indian entities in the top 20 GenAI patent owners, India's  annual growth rate  in GenAI patent publications is the highest at  56 % .
•   China  also shows high growth at  50 %  but from a larger base .
• The  WIPO report  highlights Indian patents from  RN Chidakashi Technologies  and  Tata Consultancy Services .
•   A total of  54,358 GenAI patent families  were published between  2014 and 2023 , with  89 %  active by the end of  2023 .
•   Advances in AI and the introduction of transformer models in  2017  contributed to increased patent activity, with  2023  seeing over  25 %  of all GenAI patents  published .
