The length of a rectangle is 3 metres more than its width. If the perimeter of the rectangle is 78 metres then what is the area (in m2 ) of the rectangle?
Let the width of the rectangle = ‘x’ metres Then, length of the rectangle = (x + 3) metres Perimeter of the rectangle = 2 × (length + width) Or, 2 × (x + x + 3) = 78 Or, 2x + 2x + 6 = 78 Or, 4x = 78 – 6 = 72 Or, x = 72/4 = 18 m So, area of the rectangle = x × (x + 3) = 18 × 21 = 378 m2
