Mahmud Begda was a famous sultan of Gujarat. Mahmud Begada, the great-grandson of Ahmed Shah I, is considered the most prominent sultan of his lineage. His original name was Sultan Abu'l Fath Nasir ud din Mahmud Shah and was named as Begada after he conquered Pavagadh and Junagadh. He was raised to the throne at a young age of 12 years in 1458. He entitled himself as 'Sultan al Barr, Sultan al Bahr' which translates to 'Sultan of the land, Sultan of the Sea'. A Sanskrit Mahakavya named 'Mahmuda- Surtrana- Charita', Glorifying Mahmud was written by his court poet Udayraja. • He also defeated the Portuguese in the battle of Chaul (1508) and died in 1511 owing to illness.
