Britishers in 1849 annexed the Khalsa Raj. Khalsa Raj was an independent Sikh kingdom in Punjab founded by Ranjit Singh in 1799. The local religious traditions were under the threat and in response to this Sikhs initiated the Singh Sabha movement which sought to revive Sikh doctrine.
