Under Article 123 of the Indian Constitution, the President has the power to issue ordinances. This provision allows the President to legislate by ordinance during the recess of Parliament, when urgent action is required and the Parliament is not in session. These ordinances have the same force and effect as laws passed by Parliament but must be approved by Parliament within six weeks of reassembling or they will cease to operate.
