A rocket works on the principle of momentum conservation. According to Newton's third law of motion, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In the context of rockets, when the rocket engine expels propellant gases out the back at high speed (action), the rocket itself is pushed forward (reaction). This is the conservation of momentum: the momentum lost by the gases being ejected backward is gained by the rocket moving forward.
