Kalighat art originated in the vicinity of the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), West Bengal, India. This style of painting emerged in the 19th century and was characterized by its distinctive, bold lines, vibrant colors, and depictions of mythological, religious, and everyday life themes. Initially, Kalighat art was created by local artists known as "patuas" who produced these works as souvenirs for pilgrims visiting the Kalighat temple.
