Lord Canning was the first Viceroy of India. The Great Revolt of 1857 and the Indigo Rebellion of 1859-60 took place during Canning's time. The first census of India was done in the year 1872 during the time of Lord Mayo. It is notable that the first regular census of India was held in the year 1881, at this time the Viceroy was Lord Ripon.
