The 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1976 added 10 Fundamental Duties to the Indian Constitution based on recommendations from the Swaran Singh Committee. These duties were incorporated as Part IV-A of the Constitution, drawing inspiration from the Constitution of Russia (formerly USSR). An 11th duty was later added through the 86th Constitutional Amendment Act of 2002, which relates to providing educational opportunities to children between ages 6 and 14. The Fundamental Duties outline civic responsibilities of Indian citizens, including respecting national symbols, protecting the environment, and promoting harmony.
