Question

What happens to the wavelength of light when it passes

from a medium of higher refractive index to a medium of lower refractive index?
A It increases Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B It decreases Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C It remains the same Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D It becomes zero Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

When light passes from a medium with a higher refractive index to one with a lower refractive index, its speed increases, and thus its wavelength also increases.   This is a consequence of the relationship between speed, frequency, and wavelength.   The frequency of light remains constant, but the wavelength changes when the light enters a different medium.
