Question

The current age of 'N' is 25% more than the current age of

'M'. The present age of 'P' is the average of the present ages of 'M' and 'N'. Three years from now, the combined age of 'M' and 'P' will be 40 years. If the present age of 'N' is given as 'b', determine the age of 'P' after b/4 years from now.
A 22 years Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 20 years Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 23 years Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 19 years Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E 21 years Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

Let the present age of 'M' be '4y' years.

    Present age of 'N' = 1.25 X 4y = '5y' years

    Present age of 'P' = (4y + 5y) ÷ 2 = 4.5y years

    So, 4y + 4.5y = 40 - 3 - 3

    Or, 8.5y = 34

    Or, 'y' = 4

    Now, 'b' = 5 X 4 = 20 years

    Present age of 'P' = 4.5 X 4 = 18 years

    Therefore, required age of 'P' = 18 + (20/4) = 23 years
