Question
A mixture consists of milk and water in a 5:4 ratio. If
108 liters of this mixture are removed and 64 liters of water are then added, the new quantity of water surpasses the quantity of milk by 41 liters. Calculate the total volume of the original mixture.Solution
Let quantity of milk and water in the original mixture be 5x litres and 4x litres respectively. Quantity of milk in 108 litres of mixture = 108 × 5/9 = 60 litres Quantity of water in 108 litres of mixture = 108 – 60 = 48 litres According to question; 5x – 60 + 41 = 4x – 48 + 64 x = 35 Quantity of original mixture = 9 × 35 = 315 litres
