Question

A metal alloy is composed of 25% silver, 45% gold, and 30%

copper. How much silver should be added to 50 kg of the alloy to make the new alloy contain 40% silver?
A 25 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 10 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 12 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 18 Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    ATQ,

Quantity of the alloy = 50 kg

    Quantity of silver in 50 kg alloy = (0.25 × 50) = 12.5 kg

    Quantity of gold in 50 kg alloy = (0.45 × 50) = 22.5 kg

    Quantity of copper in 50 kg alloy = (0.30 × 50) = 15 kg

Let the quantity of silver to be added be x kg.

    According to the question,

Quantity of silver in the new alloy = (Quantity of gold + Quantity of copper)

    (12.5 + x) = (22.5 + 15)

    Or, x = 37.5 - 12.5 = 25
