    Tap ‘A’ and tap ‘B’ can fill a tank in 32 hours and 24 hours, respectively. If both taps are opened together, then find the time after which tap ‘A’ must be closed so the whole tank can be filled in 15 hours.

    Solution

    Let total capacity of the tank is 96 litres (LCM of 32 and 24) Quantity of water filled by tap ‘A’ in one hour = 96/32 = 3 litres Quantity of water filled by tap ‘B’ in one hour = 96/24 = 4 litres Let tap ‘A’ is closed after ‘x’ hours So, 7 × x + 4 × (15 – x) = 96 Or, 3x = 36 Or, x = 12 hours
