    Let the first, second and third number be a,b and c respectively. a : b = 2 : 5 b : c = 7 : 8 a : b : c = 2×7 : 5×7 : 8×5 a : b : c = 14 : 35 : 40 a + b + c = 178 => 89k = 178 => k = 2 Therefore, the second number is (b) = 35×2 = 70
