Let the distance between his home and the bank be x km. Time taken to cover x km at 40 km/h = x/40 h. Time taken to cover x km at 50 km/h = x/50 h. Difference between the time taken = 18 + 12 = 30 min = 1/2 h. ∴ x/40 - x/50 = 1/2 ⇒ 5x - 4x = 100 ⇒ x = 100 km.
