Question
A train running at 72 km/hr takes 20 seconds to pass a
platform and the train takes 6.5 seconds to pass a car running at 36 km/hr in the opposite direction. Find the length of the train and that of the platform.Solution
Speed of the train = 72 kmph i.e., 72 × 5/18 = 20m/s So, total distance cover in 20 seconds = 20 × 20 = 400m Speed of Car = 36kmph i.e, 36 × 5/18 = 10m/s Relative speed of Car and Train in Opposite direction = 20 + 10 = 30 m/s So, Distance cover in 6.5 seconds = Length of the train = 30 × 6.5 = 195m Hence, Length of the Platform = 400 – 195 = 205m
