    Two individuals, 'A' and 'B', set off towards each other

    from points 'P' and 'Q', respectively. 'A' moves at a speed of (x + 8) km/hr, while 'B' travels at (x - 2) km/hr. When they meet, the ratio of the distances covered by 'A' and 'B' is 12:7. Determine the value of 'x'.

    Solution

    Since, the time taken by them will be equal. Therefore, ratio of the speeds will be same as that of the distance travelled

    According to the question,

    (x + 8)/(x – 2) = 12/7

    Or, 7x + 56 = 12x – 24

    Or, 5x = 80

    Or, x = 80/5 = 16
