Question

Read the following group of statements and choose the best inference/s which can be deduced from the argument given below.

The argument on the power of ‘less’ obviously had lessons for the Anthropocene, the age of human impact on earth. The economic logic of ‘more’ is now entrenched around the world- consuming is a duty. This has improved life-chances around the world, but “just because more has made things better does not mean less cannot.” The planet has finite resources, and continuous progress depending on farm land, water and fossil fuels is not a real possibility.

    I. People are obsessed with the concept of ‘more’ rather ‘less’.

II. Human impact on the earth has increased life-chances around the world.

III. Consumption of resources will lead to scarcity in the near future of finite resources.

A Both I and III Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B Only II Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C Both I and II Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D Only III Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E All of the above Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

The main contention of the passage implies that humans have impacted the Earth by using its finite resources and are always obsessed with rigorous consumption. Moreover, they are obsessed with more and more usage of these finite resources, and therefore it is an implication of ‘more’ rather than ‘less’. More consumption of finite resources definitely will lead to scarcity in the near future and therefore both I and III can be clearly inferred from the passage. Statement II however lacks direct evidence and therefore can be rejected as inference. Hence, Option A is the correct answer.
