Question

In the question below some statements are given two conclusions followed by some statements. You have to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts. Read the conclusions and then decide which of the following statement is true for given conclusions.

    Conclusions:

    I. Some Apples are not Oranges.

II. Some Oranges being Pears is not a possibility.

    Statements:

A All Oranges are Bananas. Some Bananas are Pears. Some Pears are Apples. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 100% Pears are Apples. A few Oranges are Apples. No Orange is Banana. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C Only Bananas are Oranges. No Pear is a Banana. All Apples are Pears. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D Only Pears are Bananas. Some Pears are Oranges. All Apples are Oranges. Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E None of the above Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

From Statement I. All Oranges are Bananas (A) + Some Bananas are Pears (I) → No conclusion. Hence conclusion I does not follow. All Oranges are Bananas (A) + Some Bananas are Pears (I) → Probable conclusion → Some Oranges may not be Pears (I). Hence conclusion II follows. From Statement II. A few Oranges are Apples (I) → Conversion → Some Apples are Oranges (I). Hence conclusion I does not follow. 100% Pears are Apples (A) + [A few Oranges are Apples (I) → Conversion] → Some Apples are Oranges (I) → Probable conclusion → Some Oranges may not be Pears (I). Hence conclusion II follows. From Statement III. Only Bananas are Oranges → All Oranges are Bananas and Oranges can have negative relation with anyone. Hence both conclusion I and II follows. From Statement IV. Some Pears are Oranges (I) + [All Apples are Oranges (A) → Conversion] → Some Oranges are Apples (I) → No conclusion. Hence conclusion I does not follow. Some Pears are Oranges (I) → Conversion → Some Oranges are Pears (I). Hence conclusion II does not follow.
