दिगम्बर ' का संधि - विच्छेद " दिक् + अम्बर " होता है। यह ' दिक् ' ( जो ' दिशा ' या ' आसपास ' का अर्थ है ) और ' अम्बर ' ( जो ' आसमान ' या ' आवरण ' का अर्थ है ) के संयोजन से बना है। दिगम्बर का अर्थ होता है ' जो आकाश ( आसमान ) के वस्त्र में लिपटा हो ' या ' वह जो आकाश में निवास करता है ' । यह शब्द विशेष रूप से जैन धर्म में भगवान महावीर के संदर्भ में उपयोग किया जाता है।
