President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the prestigious Padma awards on November 8, 2021 to the 2020 and 2021 recipients in a ceremony held in New Delhi. The ceremony in 2020 was not held because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
- The Padma Awards are one of the highest and most respected civilian honours of India. These awards are announced on Republic Day eve annually.
- The ceremony is held at Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Hon’ble President of India confers the awards to the recipients.
- The Padma Awards Committee makes recommendations for these awards.This Committee is constituted by the Prime Minister every year.
- The Prime Minister and President of India approve the recommendations.
Brief History of Padma Awards
In 1954, the Government of India introduced two civilian awards-
- Bharat Ratna– highest civilian award of India
- Padma Vibhushan– This has three tiers:
- Pehla Varg
- Dusra Varg
- Tisra Varg
Subsequently, vide a Presidential notification issued on January 08, 1955, they were renamed as-
- exceptional and distinguished service- Padma Vibhushan
- distinguished service of high order- Padma Bhushan
- for distinguished service- Padma Shri
Evolution of the Padma Awards
- The nominee groups have changed since 1954. In other words, the number of nominations for the awards have increased as these awards have begun recognising a wider range of people.
- In 2020, 46,000 nominations were received by the government. On the other hand, only 2,200 nominations were received in 2014.
- The government launched the Padma Quiz 2018, which allows the winners to attend the award ceremony in person.
