Swedish chemist and philanthropist, Alfred Nobel designed his will in 1895 wherein a large part of his fortune was to be used to establish the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Prize is awarded to individuals who show exceptional merit in their fields. Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Literature, Medicine (or Physiology), Chemistry, Economics, Physics and Peace.

- Mahatma Gandhi was nominated several times as well but he did not win a Nobel Prize either.
- Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar, Venki Ramakrishnan, Har Gobind Khurana and Abhijit Banerjee are Nobel Laureates of Indian origin. They had given up their Indian citizenship before they received their Nobel Prizes.
- Abhijit Banerjee won the Nobel Prize in Economics jointly with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer.
- In 2020, the Nobel Prize was awarded to 11 individuals and 1 organisation (World Food Programme).
